Artist Statement

I create figurative oil paintings and drawings which combine classical technique with contemporary energy. My art reflects my obsession with the body from head to toe and the emotional lives contained within us.

When I draw, I am intensely focused on line and poised movement and when I paint, I am feverish with color, body and atmosphere. Ideas come like visions from a face, a conversation, a photo, a daydream, a fragment from a book or movie, a melody or lyric.

Both drawings and paintings begin with loosely gestural underdrawings which evolve into detailed forms. I enjoy the process of discovery on the canvas or page, approaching my subjects with spontaneity and remaining flexible in my vision for each piece. To safeguard the natural world, my practice avoids the use of solvents, chemicals, disposable elements, or pigments containing cadmium, cobalt and lead.

I started drawing as a non-verbal, sensory child born into the vibrant cacophony of New York City. When other children drew their families and pets under a yellow sun, I drew animals fighting ferociously with fierce mythical creatures. As I grew, my art progressed to animals socializing like humans, to feral girls and ladies, and ultimately to the mythology of womanhood in all its life stages combined with the substantial realities of the flesh. I want people to feel deeply that each body has a story which deserves to be seen and told.
