ABOUT

Delia Gable is an American figurative painter based in the Pacific Northwest. Her work centers around the emotional narratives and physical tangibility of the human body in all its variations of form. See her artist statement here.

Delia Gable was raised in New York City, NY where she attended the Children's Class at the Art Students League of New York for seven years. Between 8 and 10 years old, her art was chosen to print as an internationally sold UNICEF Greeting Card, won the Annual Spring Exhibition at the Art Students League of New York and Honorable Mention (USA) in an international competition co-sponsored by the United Nations, and was exhibited at both the Museum of American Folk Art in Rockefeller Center and the United Nations headquarters.

Her interest in exploring the body began when she was a teenager, growing up female in a sociopolitically charged climate as well as being diagnosed with a rare illness involving invasive medical interventions. Her fight to maintain bodily autonomy broadened to include other bodies as she became aware of the struggles of adults around her, the media treatment of women, and a draconian imposition of mercurial “beauty” standards on one side of humanity. These exposures all contributed to a growing fascination with bodies existing freely and defiantly while taking up pictorial space.

She received her BFA from the University of Pennsylvania and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts. She was awarded the Fox Family All-Campus Juror’s Choice Award for her undergraduate thesis project and the Presidential Scholarship Award as a graduate student.

Since 2015, she resides in western Washington state. Between the East Coast and Pacific Northwest she has exhibited her drawings and paintings in over 20 group shows including Cinque Gallery, Westside Gallery, Casa Frela Gallery, and Slip Gallery, performed live drawing demonstrations at the Tacoma Museum of Art, and served as a judge for the 29th Annual Lambda Literary Awards. Her art has also been published in comics, graphic novels, illustrated books and album covers, and is part of the permanent collection archives at Yale University, University of Puget Sound, and the Art Students League of New York.
